Hair Growing

If you're ready for the commitment of growing long hair, make sure you continue to have regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. It might seem like the quickest way to grow your hair is not to cut it at all, but that is not the case. Regular trims, every 8-10 weeks, will keep your hair looking good while you go through many stages of growing it out.

Wear and Tear
Once your hair emerges from your scalp, it is considered dead and has no way to renew itself. So by the time your hair is past your shoulders it is a couple of years old.
Even if we look after our hair, it is still a long time to face the daily wear and tear we inflict on our hair - brushing, washing, blow drying, dying and more! This daily damage plus your bodies health can all impact on your hair
growing abilities.

Reasons for slow hair growth
A healthy diet also plays a major role in your hair's condition and growth rate. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to thinning hair - ultimately your hair reflects the condition of your body.
Your hair may stop growing if you have any health problems or are suffering from any nutritional deficiencies.
Since hair is protein, a low protein diet may sometimes be the cause of a slow hair growth cycle. If you eat a protein-rich diet, it will often result in improved hair growth.
Excessive stress is known to slow down hair growth, and can even lead to hair falling out. If your life is particularly stressful, try to set aside some time for meditation or relaxation. It has also been discovered that regular sleep can help your hair grow faster (7-9 hours a night is suggested).

Foods, Vitamins and supplements to help hair growth
Hair is mostly protein, so nutritionists advise those wanting healthy hair to eat well balanced diets that include healthy proteins, along with foods high in vitamin B, C, E, A and K.
Your hair will most likely respond well to the addition of high protein foods such as meats, eggs, cheese, seeds and nuts. Fish has good protein as well as essential fatty acids and natural oils.
Vitamin B - Green vegetables, beans, sunflower seeds, nuts and peas.
Vitamin C - Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes, melons and berries.
Vitamin E - Avocados, rice bran, nuts, dark green vegetables, legumes and whole grains.
Vitamin A - Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, cantaloupe and apricots.
Vitamin K - Seafood, dairy, figs, asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, brussel sprouts, cabbage, dark green leafy vegetables, oatmeal, soybeans, wheat, yoghurt, egg yolks and liver.

Hair Growing Tips
·         Eating a healthy diet. Avoid or cut back on smoking, drinking alcohol, caffeine and foods that are high in sugar or fat. These are all bad for your body, and will affect the condition of your hair.
·         Allow your body to grow hair by giving yourself plenty of sleep and rest. Give yourself time to relax when you're feeling very stressed.
·         Buy a good quality brush or comb - avoid cheap plastic brushes.
·         Treat your hair carefully by avoiding any unnecessary brushing.
·         Limit the use of styling tools such as straighteners, hair dryers and hot rollers - these all cause stress to your hair.
·         Have regular trims to get rid of split ends and to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.
·         Weekly scalp massages provide stimulation to the hair follicles.
·         Also do a weekly hair treatment to protect the hair's shaft.
·         Avoid chlorine and saltwater. If you go swimming, shampoo your hair as soon as possible afterwards. If you spend alot of time in the sun, use a conditioner that provides SPF protection.
·         Do not brush your hair when wet. Use a wide tooth comb and be gentle with your hair when it is wet. Do not rub it vigorously with a towel
All About Straight Hair
If you have been blessed with fairly straight hair, then you are lucky and the envy of many women (myself included). Thick hair that is mostly straight, with maybe a slight wave is usually the easiest hair to style. Your natural wave loves to be curled and styled, and yet is easy to straighten and looks fabulous worn straight. Women with tight curly hair, or fine, dead straight hair that has little body and refuses to hold curl (yes, that's me!) struggle to style our hair at times.
If your hair is not quite as straight as you want it, you have some easy options to temporarily straighten your hair: straightening products, hair dryer or straightening iron.If your hair is really not straight and you want to get rid of your curl permanently (well, at least 6 months), you have the option of professionally straightening your hair.

Hair Braiding

What to know about Hair Braids
The Saying that hair is a womans crowning glory,
is indeed very true... Because a woman's
appearance is immediately uplifted by the crown
and her head. Like everything in fashion, hairstyles
come and go and so in age, what styles are in
vogue? Allure's Carol Arhere wrote that braids and
cornrows have become a popular alternative for
Africa's fashion conscious women.

BRAIDS and cornrows have been around for years,
they have remained popular because they are
cheap to maintain and they are versatile. They allow
the wearer to do several styles creating different
exciting looks. Braids and cornrows are with many
ladies because they give the wearer's natural hair
time to recover from the rigors of relaxers and other
chemical products. In recent times, more woman
and even men have turned to braids and cornrows.

Braiding involves taking three strands of hair,
starting at the scalp, and over laying one strand on
another, until the desire effect is created. While
cornrows are braids under woven to lie flat on the
head and then sculpted into simple or complex
parting and sectioning. There are different types of
braids and cornrows.

Straight braid also called Bob Marley:
This braid is perfect on coarse hair because of its
texture. It can be done in several ways depending
on the choice of the wearer. It can be: fish tails, or
packed together to form ponytail at the back or
dropped around the shoulders.

Ghana weaving:
This hairstyle is also suitable for coarse hair
because it allows the braider to pull the hair tighter,
without causing any damage or breakage to the
hair. The hair piece used for this hair style is mostly
synthetic.

Water melon:
Pick and drop braids as it is popularly called. This
style takes longer hours, because of the various
procedures in achieving the style. It looks more
beautiful on the wearer and lasts longer. Synthetic
hairpiece is also suitable for this hairstyle.

Kinky braids:
These are won by both men women. It can be
made with the original kinky braids or with any other
good hairpiece.
Cornrows on the other hand are worn by both men
and women as well; we have the all back cornrows.

Basket weaving also known as Alicia keys:
This style is made with little or no hairpiece there is
also the splitting pattern, which involves the use of
more hair piece to create the desired pattern.

Presently, attention is drawn to water melon
hairstyle. This style is making waves because, of
it's durability and comfort. Water melon hairstyle is
in vogue because it is light and very convenient to
carry.
Braids generally is a popular hairstyle, because it
allows air to circulate to the scalp and helps to keep
the wearer cool.
So to have the sassy update look this season, join
the braids wagon with these look.

Tips for maintaining braids and cornrows:
- Always make sure your hair is properly washed
and treated with deep conditioner before putting in
braids and cornrows.

- Do not use heavy hair cream this tends to weigh
your hair down causing build-up and flaky scalp.

-For you comfort selects a style that is appropriate
for your hair length and texture.

-Do not leave your braids for more than eight weeks
at a time. As your hair may begin to lock causing
severe breakage.

-Put your hair in a silky or satin scarf before going to
bed at night to avoid frizz.
